what is the real?
This provocative question is the title of the first text that we will read in our 2026/ 2027 LCNY Seminar. It is the question that Jacques-Alain Miller asks in the first meeting of his yearly course of 1998 to 1999, entitled, in English translation, The Experience of the Real in Psychoanalysis (Le réel dans l’expérience analytique), as part of his Lacanian Orientation (annual courses from 1972 to 2011). Though Miller begins with this question, he doesn’t give us a definitive answer in this first seminar (called lesson). Instead, throughout this course, he shows us different manifestations of the real in analysis: the symptom, jouissance, object a, lalangue, the non-rapport, the body event, the real unconscious, and the sinthome. He juxtaposes the early Lacan with the late Lacan and shows us how Lacan moves towards a new notion of embodiment in his later work. The Lacanian real, as we know, is distinct from reality, and is what cannot be said in most discourse. However, in this course, Miller shows us how the signifier and the real form a new alliance through jouissance. Beginning in October 2026 and ending in Dec 2027, we will read the lessons from this course that have been translated and published in English.
