Spare Parts: Miller with Lacan, after Joyce
In our 2024-2025 Seminar we will read six lessons from Jacques-Alain Miller’s 2004 to 2005 Seminar, Pièces détachées (translated variously as Detached Pieces or Spare Parts), and two short, but dense, texts by Jacques Lacan, sometimes entitled “Joyce the Symptom I” and “Joyce the Symptom II,” as well as an earlier text by Miller entitled “Lacan with Joyce.” In Miller’s yearly Seminar, he makes many references to Lacan, but one reference that is repeated is to “Joyce the Symptom.” We will begin with Miller’s earlier discussion in “Lacan with Joyce” to gain some quilting points on this connection between the later Lacan and James Joyce. Then we will discuss the two “Joyce the Symptom” texts, and finally we will work through the further innovations that Miller makes in his Seminar with his own development of this new Lacanian symptom and his notion of spare parts or detached pieces.
We will meet via Zoom one Monday a month from Sept 2024 to June 2025, excluding February. Registrants will be sent copies of any texts that are difficult to locate due to being out of print. See the Bibliography below.
